Space Rocket History #332 – Soyuz 11/Salyut 1 – The Fire & SRH 7th Year Celebration

Just before the start of another communication session, Volkov noticed a smell of smoke from somewhere at the rear of the station. As soon as communication with the ground was established, he reported:  “Aboard the station is ‘the curtain’!”

  1. It was a pretty bizarre event, wasn’t it? Practically a script for how-not-to-handle-an-emergency. Like you, I’d be very curious to know how the crew and ground were trained to handle a fire.

“There is a fire on board” could be “I think I see smoke” or it could be “I made it to the Soyuz but I think the others are dead” or anything in between. I’m not sure how much help the ground could realistically be. And then botching the code word on top of it…
